New software application by Sepura helps the Police

*

Police forces in the UK must record certain information when stopping somebody in the street and asking them to account for their presence in an area at a particular time.  This procedure is usually referred to as ‘Stop & Account’. Sepura has developed an intelligent software application to help Police officers carry out “Stop and Account” operations more swiftly and efficiently.

During the “Stop and Account” procedure, the ethnicity of the person stopped needs be recorded in order to ensure that the Police are using their powers fairly; the time and location also need to be recorded. In addition, to ensure accountability of the Police, officers need to let the person stopped know who they are - by giving them a receipt or business card with their details.

Sepura’s software application, currently on trial with a major metropolitan Police force, makes the recording process faster and more efficient by helping officers capture information more accurately and in a more user-friendly manner. The application is also in the public interest, as it minimises the time spent for the procedure when a person is stopped by a Police officer.

Sepura’s solution, developed for its SRH hand-held and STP hand-portable TETRA radios, transforms the ethnicity data into a Short Data Application (SDA) message, whilst also sending GPS location and time stamping directly to a central database. In addition, the officers’ operational status is automatically updated on the display of the radio so that they know, just by looking at the screen, the latest status communicated to the control room.

Peter Hudson, Product Manager for Sepura commented “This simple, but effective software application will considerably lighten Police officers’ load, by simplifying the tasks they have to perform regularly on a daily basis. It will also bring substantial cost-savings by removing the need for additional, expensive IT equipment”.
